1. How Long Can Mushrooms Be Preserved?
If stored properly, mushrooms can last longer than you might think.Brian Jupiter, chef at Frontier Chicago and Ina Mae Tavern, explains: “Raw mushrooms can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 10 days. However, they are best eaten within the first week. After that, the quality of the mushrooms will decline.”Mushrooms left outside the refrigerator can be kept for at most one day, depending on the temperature.
Exceptions to the 10 – Day Rule
The 10 – day rule doesn’t apply to all mushrooms. If you buy pre – sliced mushrooms, if stored properly, their shelf life may only be 5 to 7 days. Some delicate varieties, such as maitake or oyster mushrooms, may only last a few days, after which you should check for signs of spoilage.
2. Know When Mushrooms Go Bad
Usually, you don’t need to do a taste test to know if mushrooms have gone bad.
Texture Changes
One of the most obvious signs of mushroom spoilage is that their texture changes from firm and plump to slimy. Similarly, if they become dry or completely shriveled, it’s time to say goodbye.
Color and Growths
If the color of the mushrooms changes significantly, or if they start to grow black spots or fuzz, they should be thrown into the compost pile.
Smell
Most mushrooms have little aroma, so a bad smell may be another sign of mushroom spoilage.
Ashley Petrie, a registered dietitian for Everyday Homemade magazine, says: “Some more delicate mushroom varieties, such as enoki mushrooms, may spoil faster. It’s best to make preparations before buying any mushrooms.”
Due to the wide variety of mushroom species, with different flavors and textures, some varieties may show signs of spoilage quickly or slowly. So, make an eating plan for your mushrooms, and if you store them because you don’t plan to cook them immediately, pay close attention to them.
3. Can You Freeze Mushrooms?
Technically, mushrooms can be frozen, but eating frozen raw mushrooms may not produce the most ideal results.
Vergara said: “Mushrooms are best cooked and eaten when fresh. Although freezing mushrooms can retain their freshness, they will lose a lot of nutritional value and texture after thawing.”
Freezing Steps
If you choose to freeze mushrooms, first wipe them clean with a paper towel, and then put them in a sealed bag for storage. Do not wash the mushrooms! Mushrooms have a high water content and will absorb water like a sponge when water is added.
